Our History
The Evansville Teachers Association (ETA) began in 1914 when local educators united to advocate for fair wages and stronger professional representation. Early efforts—like petitioning for salaries of $100 per month for elementary teachers—faced resistance, but they laid the foundation for lasting change.
Over the decades, ETA secured major wins for educators, including professional salary schedules, extra duty pay, group insurance plans, and even the creation of a teachers’ credit union.
Today, with nearly 700 members, ETA remains committed to the same core mission: representing educators, strengthening public schools, and improving conditions for both teachers and students. Recognized statewide for effective advocacy, ETA champions fair compensation, professional respect, and quality education for every child—regardless of race, color, creed, or socioeconomic status.
